This concert, by the Abingdon Symphony Orchestra (led by Kate Bailey, conducted by Alexander Walker) opens with Franz Liszt’s Hungarian
Rhapsody No 2 and closes with the impressive Organ Symphony by Camille Saint-Saens (organist, John Oxlade). Between these deservedly popular works comes one of the greatest concertos ever written – the Violin Concerto in D by Brahms, in which the soloist is the accomplished violinist, Olivier Bonnici. |

This illustrated talk features Donald Burrows, Professor of Music at the Open University, the leading Handel scholar in the UK, and frequent
broadcaster. His books include Handel (in the Master Musicians series), and (as editor) the Cambridge Companion to Handel. Donald was
formerly conductor of ADMS and he returns to Abingdon by request of
the Society. This is a fine opportunity, shortly before Messiah is
performed, to hear how Handel created this great work. (See also

The pianist, David Shaw, first performed solo in public in the Abingdon Corn Exchange at a “Roysse’s” school concert in 1954. After a year at Dartington College and National Service, he was awarded a major
county scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music, graduating with the Certificate of Merit. After directing music in Grammar and
Comprehensive schools he decided to devote more time to the piano
whilst on the staff at New College and European Schools. He has long standing experience as an accompanist and giving solo recitals
especially for charity. |

“Twist” return to the Festival this year by popular demand; a young band who play their own original songs in the pop/soft rock idiom with Oliver Nicholls keyboards, Simon Nicholls guitar, and Lewis Spring bass guitar.
“No Agenda” is an alternative rock band based in Oxford with roots
