Another in ABCD’s series of classic silent comedies, this time by one of the world’s greatest filmakers, Yasujiro Ozu. Made in Japan in 1932, brothers Ryoichi and Keiji, a true pair of young rascals, struggle to outwit the local bully and scale the pecking order in their new neighbourhood, but they they discover that injustice does not end with school. Once again our annual silent has piano accompaniment by National Film Theatre pianist, Andrew Youdell. Running time 87 minutes, Cert U.

Come and enjoy a wonderful film and some great live jazz at this historic Abingdon pub.

7:30 pm: First set with George Haslam, saxophone, Steve Smith, bass, and Jez Cook, guitar, returning after the film. Guardian writer John Fordham described George as “a fine baritone saxophonist with a distinct signature” and “an entire jazz scene on his own”. Their second set follows at 9:45pm.

Another silent era classic. Herbert Ponting, described by the explorer as ‘an artist in love with his work’, directed this official record of the celebrated British Antarctic Expedition. To celebrate the centenary of Scott’s reaching the South Pole, we will be screening the beautiful and dramatic National Film Archive restoration with a new musical score by Simon Fisher Turner.
